Welcome to Early Years.
This month was very exciting as we began a new unit – Sharing the Planet. As part of this unit, the children were introduced to several different seed activities to help them understand what seeds are. Some of the activities included: discussing the many plants we eat, the stems we eat and the roots we eat. We also learnt about what’s needed for plants to grow. We planted beans in a jar and everyday we are watching how much they grow. The students were introduced to the stages of the plant cycle and they were amazed by the different stages a seed takes to become a plant!. They are now fully aware of how to grow a plant.
In Language and Literacy, we introduced letter sounds Q and Z, learning the sounds and the actions to go with them as well as tracing the letters and learning to write them using the correct letter formation. We also blended the sounds learnt to decode together to form simple words.
In Mathematics we will continue to develop our understanding of addition and subtraction and the strategies to solve these problems. We will also be learning about doubling and halving .The way we approach Maths in the Early Years is to make sure that it is set within a context that is real! For example when learning about growing plants , we will be encouraging the children to use everyday language related to length such as long, short, longer than, shorter than etc. Each week we will be exploring different habitats and watching and carefully recording what happens to our tadpoles.
Looking forward to another great week in early years.

I would like to wish everyone who is celebrating this month, Mabrouk Ramadan.
This week in Early Years, we are studying the letter/sound Z and finding words that begin with Z. eg. Zebra, zip, zero, zoo.
We will continue with our UOI and the students will inquire into the importance of plants and the responsibility towards them. Last week we planted beans and now we will observe and document how they are growing. This will help students develop their writing skills through pre writing activities in their writing journal. Our key concept is responsibility.
The students will also be involved in making various products derived from plants.eg oranges to orange juice, carrots to carrot juice.
In maths we will continue measuring length in non-standard ways, using strings, chain links, and unifx cubes. Then we will explore standard measurements using rulers, yard sticks, and tape measures. The students will be engaged in solving problems by asking questions like: Will this table fit through the door if we needed to take it out of the room? So we need to measure the door and the table and then we will discuss the probability.
On Friday May25th at 8:45 am we are going on a fabulous field trip to see a play called ADMIRABLE P’TIT MOUK at Le Studio des Arts Vivants. I sent the permission slip last Friday. Please sign it ASAP and send it back to school with 100, -DH.
Once again looking forward to a great week.

First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone who joined us for Family Fun Day last Saturday. It was good to see each and every one of you have great fun. It is always pleasant to see our families and friends come and support ISM events.
Furthermore, I would also like to thank parents who donated to our silent auction
“Picnic Basket’. The money raised will be used towards building bathrooms in a school in a rural area here in Casablanca. We will communicate to you the name of the school in due course – Massive Thank you to everyone who did the bidding! Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
We are eager to get back into our normal class routine, albeit Spirit Week was such an exciting week. This week we will continue with our unit, Sharing the Planet, thestudents will have the opportunity to learn about plants and about environmental awareness and responsibility towards all living things. We will promote Caringby showing compassion towards all living things that share the planet with us and discuss the different ways we can help to make a positive difference to save our planet. In math, we will be reviewing numbers 1-18 and introducing number 19. In addition to that, we will also practice tracing, writing and identifying number 10-19 with its value. Also, reinforce what comes after and up to number 19.
Looking forward to another great week.

The ISM Family Fun Day is on Saturday May 12. at noon. One of the fundraising events is a silent auction for various gift baskets that each class has put together around a chosen theme. On the day of the fair, guests write down how much they would like to pay for a basket, and at the end of the day the highest offer gets to take the basket home.
The theme for our class is 'PICNIC.' The idea is for each family to donate one or more (as you wish) items (brand new) that would be fit for a picnic! I have attached the following photo's to give an idea of some items :
jar olives,( green and black)
Please let me know which items you intend to bring. Deadline is Friday May 11.
Thank you for your support.
Please email me if you have any questions.

We had a fabulous beach clean up last week in Dar Bouazza. Our students and parents made a great effort to clean up all the trash. A great ISM community effort! These small changes in our lives can make a big impact on our planet.
Lets keep reminding ourselves by saying no to plastics!
TuesdayMay 1st is a public holiday and there will be no school on that day.
On Friday is Early Years sports day. We will be playing many games in the school yard eg. relay, egg and spoon, parachute and many more.
This week we will continue with our Unit of Inquiry: Sharing the Planet. We will be inquiring how plants sustain life on Earth and play a role in our lives.
In math we are talking about volume and weight and numbers 1-18.
The sound of the week is V where we will be learning the Jolly Phonics song and making vocabulary books.
Once again we are looking forward to a great week.
