Last week ended on a high note as the kids dressed in character in celebration of Language and Literacy Week. Friday ended with a house competition drawing upon knowledge of books. What a fun event!
Last week also marked the end of the second term. Report cards are in the final stages and will be ready for all learners to share with parents on Wednesday, March 21 (First Day of Spring!). Please look for an email to sign up for your student-led conference.
Today and next Monday our ISM basketball teams are practicing after school to prepare for upcoming games against other schools’ teams. If your child is on the team, please remember to arrange for this activity. There are no after school activities this week. The next round will begin soon, with new choices for your children.
This week we will be exploring coordinates in math. Year five students will be focusing on using one quadrant to read and plot coordinates. Year six students will be drawing and labeling a pair of axes in all four quadrants with equal scaling. This extends their knowledge of one quadrant to all four quadrants, including the use of negative numbers.
In Daily 5 this week, all learners will be assessed in word work to see what their next steps for this new term will be. Word work is an important element of the Daily 5 and one that many students don’t put enough emphasis on. Word work helps learners discover strategies to manipulate words in a variety of ways … including spelling them. The writing task is a free choice write and the CAFÉ focus is on comprehension strategies. Remember that your child is expected to read every night, and should have a book at home to read.
Our new unit of inquiry will be launched soon, but first all learners will be reflecting on the last one. More information will come as we unfold the new unit in class.
Heads-up … school photos will be taken next week. More information will be coming from school.
Have a great week!
