We welcome term 3 with open minds and your children are ready for the challenges.
This week we will be delving further into our unit of inquiry by focusing on a review of simple machines, an exploration of complex machines and an introduction to Newton’s Laws of Motion. Your child will have a homework assignment to find examples of simple machines in your house. You are encouraged to work with your child on this and share your knowledge of the inclined plane, pulley, wedge, lever, screw, wheel and axle and compound machine.
Transformational geometry is this week’s math’s umbrella topic. Under that umbrella, your children will be reflecting shapes, presented on a grid, in a vertical or horizontal line (*reflection), translating shapes horizontally or vertically (*translation), rotating a simple shape or object about its centre or vertex (*rotation), and discovering and creating tessellations. Each of these topics have specific academic vocabulary that are necessary to describe movement:
line of symmetry, horizontal, vertical, image, mirror line, translation, reflection, rotation,
clockwise, anticlockwise, tessellation
In Daily 5 we will continue with our regular balanced literacy choices, but with particular emphasis this week on word work. In word work, your children work with words from Words Their Way, which is an open-ended, individual process. It individualizes the way students learn to spell words. It is a hands-on approach to practice spelling patterns in words. It allows students to manipulate words into different categories, which helps students analyze and examine, compare and contrast and differentiate the patterns into words. There is no writing prompt due this week, but everyone will be working towards the next one which is due on April 6th.
This Friday is the monthly assembly. Our class will be performing something fun. Please come to the assembly and stay for the parent meeting directly afterwards. The topics being presented are the 6 Traits of Writing and the Daily 5. The more you know about these literacy frameworks, the more you will be able to support your child’s growth in reading and writing.
I hope all Year 6 parents are able to attend the important meeting about PYP Exhibition. The meeting will be on Tuesday, March 26th at 11:00 in the Library.
Have a great week!
