The year 5/6 environmental consultants are ready to present their research to you.
Please come to our class for an information session on
Wednesday afternoon between 2:30-3:15.
All students will be presenting their G.R.A.S.P. that demonstrates their understanding of
the central idea: Changes that materials undergo can pose both challenges and benefits
for society and the environment.
Please continue to collect warm clothing for our donation boxes at school. The clothes collected will be going to needy people in Morocco. “If we want ‘our children’ to make a difference in the world we need to help them personalize the action they take, and understand that it is not just a mandate from their parents and teachers, but a life long mindset they develop” (http://www.whatisib.com/what-is-action.html).
We may have the pleasure of welcoming student-visitors to our class this coming Wednesday. These students are interested in knowing more about our school, and our school community. I am sure that our year 5/6 learners will be wonderful hosts and hostesses.
The maths focus for this week is looking at how we use letters to stand for unknown numbers. We will be moving on to simplifying algebraic expressions. The word ‘algebra’ comes from the Arabic al-jabr and was first used in AD 825 to mean ‘rejoining separate parts’. We join letters and numbers in our expressions. Please remind your child to spend some time on Mathletics.
In Daily 5, the CAFÉ strategy that will be highlighted is Expanding Vocabulary and the Writing Traits are Voice and Conventions. All learners have recently had their reading assessed with a running record. It is with great pleasure that I can share that each student has progressed in their reading! Please ask your child about his or her progress.
We will be launching our new unit of inquiry very soon. Your child will be asked to bring a cultural artefact, or a photo of one, to school. A cultural artefact is an item that, when found, reveals valuable information about the society that made or used it. An artefact tells a story. We will be discussing this in class, and all students should have a good idea what to bring. Your support is appreciated. If you would like to come into our class to share a cultural artefact, we would love to have you. Please be in touch with me.
We have no school on Thursday and Friday to observe the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. Have a wonderful long weekend with family and friends.
Have a great week!
