WOW! What a fabulous celebration of diversity at ISM. We have 13 people in our class, who represent 14 nationalities. How amazing is that? Thank you to all of the parents who helped to make our Heritage Week and WorldFest such memorable events. A special thank you to Raneem’s mom, to Elias’ grandmother, and to Luma’s mom for sharing their heritage with our students. These activities really bring us closer as a community, and are appreciated very much. Thanks also to families who baked and cooked for the shared meal at WorldFest!
On Friday, we had the elections for this year’s Students’ Council. I am very proud of the year 5 and 6 boys and girls who let their names stand for positions of President and Treasurer. Running for Students’ Council demonstrates a Commitment to community, as well as Courage Confidence and Enthusiasm. I would like to congratulate Asma for being voted into the role of Vice-President and to Elias for being voted into the role of Treasurer. These students will surely represent us well. Tomorrow (Monday) we will have class elections for anyone who would like to be our class representative on Students’ Council.
With so much happening last week, we did not kick off our new unit of inquiry … but we will this week. “Changes that materials undergo can possess both challenges and benefits for society and the environment” is our central idea. If you have any talents, knowledge or skills that we could learn from, please let me know. In the coming weeks we will be looking into natural products (for health, for cleaning, etc.). If this is a passion of yours, I would love to hear from you.
In Maths, the students will be starting their exploration of multiplication and division, performing mental maths as well as demonstrating their understanding of formal written methods.
Daily 5 and CAFÉ continue with mini-lessons in writing and reading. This week the students will focus on the Trait of Sentence Fluency and the Comprehension strategy of Recognize and explain cause and effect. All students have a piece of writing due this Friday.
Thank you for the support and encouragement of your learner. Your attitudes about education can inspire your child’s educational journey.
Please don't forget the Parent Information session on Friday. I hope to see you there.
