This is where you will find out what we have been doing in the Year 7 -8 class.
Humanities, years 7 and 8:
Central Focus: Geography of Europe in Time
Lines of Inquiry: Physical Geography of Europe, Political Geography of Europe in the 1800’s, Timeline of events in Europe from 1000 AD/CE to 1900 AD/CE
UPDATE: We have started a new unit of study that will give the students an overview of the connections between physical features, political features, and events in time. We started this work this week with research into student selected dates of importance from our past studies and form our future studies. We will be creating a timeline that hangs in the class. As the year goes on, we will add to it.
English, years 7 and 8:
Central Focus: Animal Farm
Lines of Inquiry: Satire, Symbols, allegory, purpose of a text, historical context of a text
UPDATE: After writing our own stories with historical fiction, we will now study the work of George Orwell though his book, “Animal Farm”. The first part of the study is helping the students to understand what satire, symbolism, and allegory are. Students have researched these terms and presented on them in class. We will be making class posters to remind us what they are while we read the story in January. The exploration of the themes and ideas of “Animal Farm” will continue through December until winter break.
Drama, years 7 and 8:
Central Focus: Winter Show
Lines of Inquiry: Scene study, projection, enunciation, and character creation
UPDATE: Students are now working on a series of scenes that will be presented at the winter show. The themes of the performances are about the holidays and helping people throughout the world. Students are learning to project, speak clearly, and present with purpose. We look forward to seeing you at the winter show, December 14th at 7pm.
Speech and Debate, years 7 - 10
Central Focus: Catalonia Independence
Lines of Inquiry: Debate topic selection, debate research and debate format
UPDATE: We are taking a break with debate so that there are more classes to prepare for the winter show. In January, we will be starting to research the topic of Catalonia Independence. Students that are interested will be invited to go to the Middle School Debate Tournament in Fez, January 20 and 21.
