Speech and Debate, years 7 - 10
Central Focus: Catalonia Independence
Lines of Inquiry: Debate topic selection, debate research and debate format
UPDATE: Permission slips for the Fez tournament will be available and sent home on Friday 5 January. We are already hard at work reviewing and practicing the arguments needed for both sides of the topic. Permission slips for the tournament will need to be returned by 10 January.
Humanities, years 7 and 8:
Central Focus: Age of Invention
Lines of Inquiry: Events and Inventions important in the 1800’s, Roads - Canals - Bridges, Change of civilization because of invention
UPDATE: This week we will start a new unit on the inventions that changed the world from farm based economies into an industrialized civilization. Students will start by investigating one invention from the 1800’s that still influences their lives today. They will present their findings to the class.
English, years 7 and 8:
Central Focus: Animal Farm
Lines of Inquiry: Satire, Symbols, allegory, purpose of a text, historical context of a text
UPDATE: We started January with a review of the key ideas and are now investigating a summary of the narrative. Students are working on identifying satire, symbolism, propaganda, and allegory in the summary. Students have also been assigned the actual books to read at home and in class. The text should come from school to home and back. Expect each student to be reading a few pages every day or two chapters each week (about 20 pages in total).
Drama, years 7 and 8:
Central Focus: Spring Show: Scherezade
Lines of Inquiry: Scene study, projection, enunciation, and character creation
UPDATE: Students have been cast in the all school show. Year 7 and 8 students will be taking on the central parts for the production. Rehearsals will start in February so that we can focus on the debate tournament at the end of January (19 - 21).
