Year 7 - 8 Blog
This is where you will find out what we have been doing in the Year 7 -8 class.
Humanities, years 7 and 8:
Central Focus: Middle Ages History
Lines of Inquiry: Timeline, early British history, foundational leadership, crown and church, daily life in the middle ages
UPDATE: Students have drafted research essays that compare life in the middle ages to life today. They are editing the work in class though peer review, self-editing, and writer's workshop (teacher comments). The students are learning to create detailed and substantial analysis that connects to the selected evidence. In the coming weeks, students will type their work in class and learn to integrate MLA format into their writing.
English, years 7 and 8:
Central Focus: Historical Fiction Writing
Lines of Inquiry: Story plot structure, character development, conflict in plots, resolution, and historical fiction
UPDATE: The plots for our characters are finished and students have drafted eight or more paragraphs following a traditional story structure. The essays should reveal both character development, logical plot sequences, character relationships, and aspects of medieval life. For many students, this is the first historical fiction that they have completed. We will begin typing the stories in class and continue to edit them for clarity and improvement with the rubric.
Drama, years 7 and 8:
Central Focus: Creativity and Focus
Lines of Inquiry: Group building, monologues, creative expression and focus
UPDATE: Student presentations have gone well and most students are working at or above grade level for performing skills. We are now moving on to scene work.
Central Focus: Scene work
Lines of Inquiry: Memorization, Character building, and Performance
Overall: Students are cast in short scenes that we will present at the winter show (December 14th). Each scene is related to the winter season with humorous and dramatic connections; each scene reveals a different part of the human experience around the new year.
Speech and Debate, years 7 - 10
Central Focus: Resolutions and Research
Lines of Inquiry: Debate topic selection, debate research and debate format
UPDATE: We have completed our first round of debates. Students did very well - especially since this was the first debate for many of them. We will continue to engage with practice debates for the next two sessions.
